Publisher Description

Charles Paris is, as ever, waiting for a phone call from his agent, and is driven to painting and decorating to make ends meet.

A rare evening out at a high-profile restaurant among stars of stage and screen promises a break in the depressing routine. But when the restaurant’s handsome, temperamental chef is brutally murdered, Charles finds himself drawn into the ensuing investigation.

At first it seems an open and shut case: the chef’s partner is in France within hours of having a spectacular quarrel with him over a pretty youth. Yet as Charles’ inquiries take him into the feuds and jealousies of his own profession, both murder and motive are anything but obvious.

Not Dead, Only Resting

The Charles Paris Mysteries are rarely much of a mystery and "Not Dead, Only Resting" is no exception. If you're looking for a whodunit that keeps you guessing right up to the final dénouement I would suggest this is not the book for you, if you don't work out who the murderer is before the halfway point, well let's just say, your certainly no Sherlock Holmes! However, the actual plot line is secondary to the immensely likeable and well drawn characters which populate this book. Not least of these is Charles himself, the indifferently talented actor (although Charles doesn't actually do any acting in this story it's peppered with quotes Charles remembers from his, numerous, bad reviews) and his his unending optimism that a call from a casting director at the National may be just around the corner it's impossible not to warm to this loveable guy! I must also confess to looking forward to any appearance by Maurice, Charles' hopeless agent, more interested in show biz scandal and gossip than finding his clients (or at least Charles) any work.

Simon Brett's reading of the book is excellent, sometimes when a reader "does the voices" it can feel a little overdone and becomes annoying to listen to. I never feel that with Brett's portrayals, they're judged just right. I've bought a few Charles Paris books in the past and will undoubtedly buy more in the future. This book is amusing, entertaining and with it's simple plot line doesn't require too much concentration, this style of book lends itself well to the audiobook format, an easy listen.
