Publisher Description

With bullets flying, wounded soldiers scream out in pain as the Chinook comes in to land in one of the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan. At the machine's controls is one man and if he doesn't stay calm then everyone could die. That man is Flt Lt Alex 'Frenchie' Duncan DFC and he's been involved in some of the most daring and dangerous missions undertaken by the Chinook force in Afghanistan. In this book he recounts his experiences of life under fire in the dust, heat and bullets of an active war zone. At 99ft long, the Chinook is a big and valuable target to the Taliban, who will stop at nothing to bring one down. And yet Frenchie and his crew risk everything because they know that the troops on the front line are relying on them. Sweating the Metal is the true story of the raw determination and courage of men on the front line - and it's time for their story to be told.

Sweating The Metal

An excellent account of an RAF pilot's journey from joining up, training and eventually becoming a Chinook helicopter pilot. Alex 'Frenchie' Duncan DFC tells his story with humour and the right amount of profanity. He somewhat understates the importance of the job these flying 10 ton trucks do out in Afghanistan, but he tells it warts and all what it's like to fly in one of the most hostile environments, both tactically and meteorologically. As an ex member of the RAF I found the book evoked the camaraderie of the RAF and the teamwork involved in keeping these machines in the air. An excellent read and a document of modern history.

Sweating the Metal (and the reader!)

Fantastic glimpse at the life of a front line RAF Chinook pilot from aspiration to perspiration! You feel as if you're in the cockpit with Frenchie and the guys and girls in Afghanistan, as the dust and the bullets fly. Well written and a real page turner.

What a read!!!

A fantastic insight to what it's really like for a pilot serving in Afghanistan. I couldn't wait to turn the page and keep reading.
