“Earnest and empathetic.” –The New York Times

Tuberculosis has been entwined with humanity for millennia. Once romanticized as a malady of poets, today tuberculosis is seen as a disease of poverty that walks the trails of injustice and inequity we blazed for it.

In 2019, author John Green met Henry Reider, a young tuberculosis patient at Lakka Government Hospital in Sierra Leone. John became fast friends with Henry, a boy with spindly legs and a big, goofy smile. In the years since that first visit to Lakka, Green has become a vocal advocate for increased access to treatment and wider awareness of the healthcare inequities that allow this curable, preventable infectious disease to also be the deadliest, killing over a million people every year.

In Everything Is Tuberculosis, John tells Henry’s story, woven through with the scientific and social histories of how tuberculosis has shaped our world—and how our choices will shape the future of tuberculosis.

In a time of hopelessness

This is not the best time in history for those of us who are prone to despair. This book gives voice to excruciating suffering while illuminating a path forward. That is the part many of us cannot do right now. I appreciate this realistic form of optimism. I need this form of optimism. Thank you.

Another extremely nuanced and thought-provoking read!

I was so excited for this release as a vlog brothers fan! It completely surpassed my expectations! Weaving in the historical journey of TB and how it was shaped by societal expectations and prejudice, along with the experience of Henry in Sierra Leone left me all at once filled with hope and in devastated tears. Everyone should read this book to fully understand the inequities of treatment for an illness most people in the developed world view as extinct.
