APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Choosing Wil Wheaton to narrate Ernest Cline’s sci-fi love letter to ’80s pop culture is a stroke of genius. Wheaton is both an online ambassador of geek culture and a living embodiment of '80s trivia (he played Wesley Crusher in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Gordie in Stand by Me). Pouring energy and enthusiasm—and a surprisingly good Sean Connery imitation—into his storytelling, Wheaton channels the giddy nostalgia of Cline’s breathlessly paced virtual reality adventure. In other words, he Crushers it.

A story with great descriptions, depth and characterization. It not only is about video games and the 80’s but bears it fair share of religious references. Must read.
MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE THING EVER!!
I’ve never had any comfort books to come back to, but that has changed now! This book is immensely enjoyable because I myself am a gamer, and if you’re looking forward to taking part in an adventure, I highly recommend this. Also Wil Wheaton does an outstanding job of narrating the story!
Good but..
I think the story is very fun and interesting to listen to. There’s good world building, and the themes and lessons of the book’s universe parallel ours in cool ways. I like the characters for the most part. However, while I thought the story was good, I really didn’t like the dialogue. To me, it just wasn’t the best and very cringey at times. When people talk about the movie, they make complaints that the film just drops in every IP, Easter egg, and character they could… but the book does that too. When talking about the different planets in the game, the author lists like 15 different popular movies. The main character talks about how Haladay has favorite directors, and he lists like 10 popular ones. He lists what feels like 20 arcade games when talking about just ONE room. I swear this book is 40% just name-dropping popular 80s things just for a “hey I know what that is” moment.
But good book haha
