APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
When it was published in 1943, Betty Smith’s novel was celebrated for its starkly honest depiction of life in Brooklyn’s tenements. Today, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is an American classic, handed down from one generation to the next. In the summer of 1912, 11-year-old Francie Nolan is largely oblivious to the grinding poverty that surrounds her. She has everything she needs: her library card, a few pennies from her weekly junk trade, and a reading nook on the fire escape overlooking the neighbors’ courtyard. As the years pass and Francie’s family faces hardships and tragedies, Smith’s stubborn and fiercely intelligent heroine begins to imagine a different and more expansive life for herself. Francie’s spirit is irresistible—and thanks to Smith’s unflinching style, her story feels as relevant today as it did more than 75 years ago.

Slow start but worth it
The beginning of the story was hard to read , boring and seemed as if it was going nowhere. About 20 pages in I had to google reviews and a lot of people felt the same way I did. Stuck on the F train I decided to give it a second chance . At the end I appreciated her details of how New York was in the 1900’s and grew to love the characters.
Don’t give up and keep reading to the end !
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn
Wow. This book, although something I admittedly did not pick out myself, was a great read and I'm already reading it for a third time. I was assigned this book the winter break of my freshmen year and although I loathed my teacher assigning me reading assignments, this book was worth all that time spent.
A solid good read
I read as a young reader and now as a senior, I decided to reread some books that influenced me as a young person. A touching beautiful story.
