Publisher Description
This major biography includes the behind-the-scenes story to many of the landmarks in Jackson's life: his legal and commercial battles, his marriages to Lisa Marie Presley and Debbie Rowe, his passions and addictions, his children; objective and revealing, it carries the hallmarks of all of Taraborrelli's best-sellers: impeccable research, brilliant storytelling and definitive documentation.
So much has how been said and written about the life and career of Michael Jackson that it has become almost impossible to disentangle the man from the myth. This book is the fruit of over 30 years of research and hundreds of exclusive interviews with a remarkable level of access to the very closest circles of the Jackson family - including Michael himself. Cutting through tabloid rumours, J. Randy Taraborrelli traces the real story behind Michael Jackson, from his drilling as a child star through the blooming of his talent to his ever-changing personal appearance and bizarre publicity stunts.
Customer Reviews
Excellent place to start
I love the book, especially the vigorous objectivity (you can feel the pain and disappointment), but you could always feel the author's love and respect for Michael Jackson. It's a heartfelt book, but so inclusive. This is the definitive book on Michael, a must for anyone with an interest in the most legendary entertainer our world has ever known.
Intricate Look!
I loved journeying through Michael’s life w/the author. I’m so grateful for this work. I loved the interviews and quotes from Michael and everyone, really. I laughed, I cried, I was angry, I skipped a chapter, I hated (Bashir’s lies) and went back to ensure I did not miss anything. I did not want the book to end bc the end was a reminder of the end of our time on earth with Michael. If only he had known, he was perfectly, imperfect and deeply loved.
One thing I did not appreciate, is the author’s blatant jabs at Michael, Katherine, etc. Taraborrelli frequently interjects his personal opinion on what was appropriate or inappropriate. He judged Michael’s decisions and the way he handled grief over life altering events. The author’s comments felt very self-righteous, insensitive and overly critical. In the book, he comments on other journalists’ lack of objectivity but on occasion, he fails in this area as well.
While he may have walked with Michael, he was not “in” his shoes. The author’s personal opinion could have been left out, entirely. The writer tells the story, let the audience decide how they feel about the circumstance. Aside from that, great book!
Detail but subjective
This book has insight on the details of Michael Jackson's personal and professional life, but definitely is subjective. The authors opinions ring clear through the writing style and sways the reader to develop certain beliefs about Jackson. I still enjoyed reading this, but took everything with a grain of salt.
